Why it matters:

September showed US players returning to a steadier rhythm after a busy summer. More of last month’s active players stayed active, even as average deposits and bet amounts eased from August’s highs. US players also continued to deposit and bet several times more than players globally. For operators, a more loyal base with softer spend per player is a clear signal to shift from acquisition toward retention and reactivation as the Q4 sports calendar builds.

Key takeaways:

  • US average monthly deposits reached $750 in September 2026, approximately 8% below the 12-month trailing average of $816
  • US average monthly casino betting reached $5,392 in September 2026, approximately 6% below the 12-month trailing average of $5,720
  • The number of US casino bettors reached 98% of the October 2025 baseline, compared with a 12-month trailing average of 104%
  • US average monthly sports betting reached $880 in September 2026, approximately 9% below the 12-month trailing average of $971
  • The number of US sports bettors reached 98% of the October 2025 baseline, compared with a 12-month trailing average of 108%.
  • US players averaged 8.8 activity days in September 2026, in line with the 12-month trailing average
  • US active customer retention reached 75% in September 2026, 5 percentage points above the 12-month trailing average of 70% and the highest level of the period

What is the iGaming Pulse Report?

Optimove Insights’ iGaming Pulse provides a 12-month benchmark of player behavior across the US and global iGaming markets. This analysis compares key online gaming indicators based on a monthly average of 3.2 million active players in the US and 21 million globally. The period analyzed spans from October 2025 through September 2026 and covers deposits, casino and sports betting volumes, bettor growth, activity frequency, and retention.

What does the September 2026 iGaming Pulse data reveal?

The clearest move in September was in retention. US retention rose from 67% in August to 75%, the highest level in the 12-month window, after holding between 67% and 72% for most of the period. The global rate followed the same path, rising from 61% to 75%, recovering after the cool-down related to the post-World Cup period.

Spend per player moved the other way. US deposits declined 12.2% from $854 to $750, their lowest level since November 2025, and the average sports bet amount fell 17.9% from $1,072 to $880 after a strong August. Casino bet amounts eased more gently, by 1.9% to $5,392. The number of active bettors also returned toward the starting point of the period: the sports bettor index fell from 119% to 98% of the October 2025 baseline, and the casino index slipped from 100% to 98%.

Engagement held steady through these shifts. US players averaged 8.8 activity days, matching their 12-month average, and the global figure also matched its trailing average at 8.9 days.

The US value lead over the global market remains wide. US players deposited $750 on average in September, about three times the global $240, and bet $5,392 on casino and $880 on sports, compared with $1,372 and $397 globally. With a more loyal base heading into Q4, the opportunity for operators lies in turning that retention into renewed spend.

September 2026 versus 12-month trailing average

US metric September 2026 12-month trailing average Difference
Average deposit amount $750 $816 -8%
Average casino betting amount $5,392 $5,720 -6%
Casino bettors growth trend 98% 104% -6 percentage points
Average sports betting amount $880 $971 -9%
Sports bettors growth trend 98% 108% -10 percentage points

Active customer retention rate 75% 70% +5 percentage points

Casino and Sports Bettors Growth Trend: The growth of the number of active casino or sports bettors over the last 12-month period. It uses the first month of the analyzed period as a baseline (100%) and shows relative growth or decline from there.

Active Retention Rate: The percentage of Casino and Sports bettors who were active in the preceding month and remained active in the current month.

What This Means for iGaming Operators

  1. Turn the retention high into loyalty. With retention at 75%, the highest level of the period, operators have a larger base of consistently active players than at any point in the past year. This is the moment to strengthen loyalty journeys, such as tier progression, personalized milestones, and recognition for consistent play, so that more of these players stay active through Q4.
  2. Reactivate sports bettors who dropped off after August. The number of US sports bettors fell from 119% to 98% of the baseline in a single month, and the average sports bet amount declined 17.9%. Operators can identify players who were active in August but did not return in September and re-engage them with relevant, event-led offers as the fall sports calendar builds.
  3. Protect value with personalized incentives, not blanket bonuses. US players still deposit about three times the global average, but deposits fell to $750, 8% below the 12-month average. Rather than broad promotions, operators can use segment-level insight to target deposit-based incentives at the high-value players whose spend eased, protecting margin while restoring value.

In Summary

September 2026 brought the highest US retention rate of the past 12 months, at 75%, alongside steady engagement at 8.8 activity days. At the same time, deposits and bet amounts eased from August’s highs, and the number of active bettors returned close to the October 2025 baseline. US players continue to deliver several times the value of the global market.

For operators, the combination of a more loyal player base and softer spend per player points to a clear priority: invest in retention and personalized reactivation now to convert September’s loyalty into stronger value through the rest of the year.
